Ancient Kauri

Post by frazeeg »

I have to ask, anyone ever made a pipe out of ancient kauri? I feel like it should be along the lines of morta since it's created with more or less the same process. Just out of 50,000 year-old kauri instead of oak.

However, the stuff is wicked expensive. The 40ft slab on the front page is worth $100,000! Dining table, anyone?

At the price this stuff sells for you could buy a lot of briar.

Are there no peat bogs in the US of A?

Damn few, and they're mostly under legal protection. Those Canadians have lots of 'em, but I don't think there's any oak in those.

It's not so much that I'm looking for a morta alternative, just that I was curious if anyone had used it before. I'd love to see a pipe made with ancient kauri, but I'm sure it would be well out of my price range.
