Oneway Chuck potential problem...

Got the Oneway Chuck the other day, but it isn't exactly living up to the reviews I read. I'm hoping it is just a matter of me being incredibly stupid and not doing something obvious. The problem is that the scrolling action is very stiff. I had read that it is quite smooth and easy.

For a couple hundred bucks I'm expecting smooth and easy. The three jaw piece of junk that came with my HF metal lathe is smoother...

Thoughts?

It will loosen up significantly as you use it. ;)

So this is normal then?

Okay, thanks.

Mine was smooth from day 1, no issues....

Any recommendations then?

Oil it maybe? Mine was fine the first time so maybe you just got a defective one.

I wouldn't give up on that model of chuck. It's one of my best woodworking tool purchases, and I use it for more than just pipemaking.

Love mine and it was smooth from the start so maybe one slipped by quality control. I'd exchange it. It's true, though, that, as long as it's not too bad, it will loosen up with use.

Agreed. Almost 10 years on and mine is still as smooth as silk, just like the day I got it. Definitely contact Oneway and see about an exchange.

Update... went out to the shop and literally spent five straight minutes just working the action. It's smooth now and requires hardly any effort. Must've just needed to be broken in or something. I did contact Oneway, but I don't think I'll need to exchange at this point.

Don't tell Ernie...he's likely to try and add me to his pinewood derby pipe making investigation committee. ;)
