Rustification Feedback?

Post by billiard »

Please ignore the pipe itself.

Early on I ran into a issue with the block and decided that it would never make a finished pipe of quality to get a spot on one of my racks so I just used it to work on a few of the issues I could use help with. I did a bit button (albeit thick) just for practice then blasted it with the heat gun and gave it as much of a bend the still fat stem could handle. I figure friends will smoke just about any free pipe you give them so if it salvaged it's better than tossing it.

Since I had a whole bunch of wood to mess with on what was to be a short fat nosewarmer (it's 4.25") I thought I could also use it to practice some rustification. I used a different technique for this one, well really just a new tool but this one has a handle so it is much nicer to use.

* Now, I realize some of you do not like rustification at all, but for those of you who will abide it: I would really appreciate your thoughts on it as I personally like it and think I might like to use it on a nicer pipe (if I ever make one).

Thanks very much,

I'm not a big fan of rustication, but I think you did a nice job on this one.

The pattern is uniform and random.

My only comment is that I would rather the rustication be more shallow.
But that's just my personal preference.

Nice job.

I like it. I also like the pipe, FWIW.

Thanks very much for the feedback everyone, I appreciate it.

I just spent a bunch of money on a really good extra large block that I want to make a magnum with in this shape (though completed and not the super thick stem) and if the block doesn't hold up I am going to rusticate it like this then.

Thanks very much Rad. It's one of those weird little homemade tools. I heated the end up of a piece of metal with my neighbor's torch then pounded it up, bent it, filed some grooves in it and sharpened it. I stuck it in a couple inches of a wood dowel and then wrapped duct tape around the end of the dowel for a little cushion. Looks pretty idiotic to be honest but what they hey.

I took the stummel and the tool with me to my son's football practice and as I sat there watching him play I just jabbed it in there and twisted it around a bunch. I only rusticated my finger one time in the process... and I think that should count as a sports injury :)

It's pop warner (5, 6, and 7 year olds) so there was a whole bunch of mom's and little ones all around me... I actually did really well with self control part and kept the extremely loud profanity ridden rant to the inside of my pumpkin head! ;)

Ha! I almost always take a few blocks of briar to my 6-year old's soccer games/practice and stare at the grain and pencil shape ideas on the side. It's a perfect venue, other than the odd looks from concerned mothers.

I like the rustification also.. and when I trod along w/my son to fencing I have a "bag on the go"... last tournament I attended.. parking was under an overpass next to a gym.. took my little bag on the go and sat out there for hours with knives.. sandpaper.. etc and shaped two bowl.. and smoked a pipe.. had my homemade leather apron on ... and smoked a pipe or two in the process... I think I heard "Mama, what's that man doing?"

gotta pass the time somehow.. fencing lasts about 3/4s of a day :fencing:

With respect sir, I would like to decline that invitation.I would like to use this tool for the next pipes I make that end up rustic and perhaps with a few more attempts it will give me my own personal style of it. Thanks much for understanding that.

Here is a well known carver's write up and demo of tools that I referenced when coming up with mine: http://fillenwarthpipes.com/rustic1.htm

Please note that I am not trying to compare\contrast\classify my work in any way in relation to his, and I realize many folks on here could duplicate mine. It's pretty easy to do, I just have been messing around with trying to find the proper tool for my personal usage for a bit now is all.

Thanks again for understanding,
Billiard

RUSTIFICATION: Its the action of making a modern or urban environment seem aesthetically traditional or rural. For example putting a wood burning stove and rustic floor boards into a modern city apartment.

Also, in China, many were sent into rustification, an internal exile.
