Lovat (I guess) 07-11

Post by bandkbrooks »

Ok...the boys baseball season is now officially done. Both boys made the final championship game in their age groups. Now my annual Spring / Summer pipe making hiatus is over. Just need to stamp it and then hopefully sell it.

My first offering in months, let 'er rip fellas (I know things I already hate about it.):

Overall I like the interpretation.. except for the mouthpiece the pre-saddle (or what ever it's called) is too long.. i'd take 2/3rds away and it will improve the flow.

That's my first gripe as well. I actually sank the delrin tenon pretty deep and due to paranoia from sanding into two delrin tenons not too long ago am paranoid. I don't think it can be shortened any more. :x The shank is also thin enough that I would be scared to start a new bit.

The other thing giving me fits is symmetry on the mouthpiece. Any suggestions on keeping it symmetrical?

Thank you for taking a look James.

To keep a stem symmetrically tapered or cylindrical, I either use the full diameter of the rod stock, or I turn it to size on the lathe. Beyond that, it's mostly just practice. It gets easier the more you do.

I agree about the stem. The shank+stem length is about right, but the flat portion of the stem is too short, and the barrel too long. No worries though, just keep it in mind for the next one.

I also feel that the bowl is a bit tall for the rest of the pipe as a whole. I would shave about 15% or 20% off the height.

Nice effort though - I bet it smokes great!

Thank you Kurt. My hope it that it won't be a first hand experience finding out how it smokes. :D

The bowl was a intentionally & non-traditionally high on purpose. I am going to the Scottish Games at Grandfather Mountain, NC next weekend. I will see a couple of my customers. We are outside all day so I made one for prolonged smoking. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I still don't own a lathe so I have find creative ways to keep everything in check for symmetry. $$$$$

Brandon

enjoy the pipe... make changes next time.. I'm starting two lovats tomorrow so you can critique mine in a few weeks... started a dublin today and perfectly drilled the pipe.. unfortunately when I started turning down the bowl I had a cravas (no other term) that ran about 2 inches long and 2 -3 mm deep.. Although I've been complianing (to my wife) about one provider of briar, this time it wasn't his fault.. it was nothing but pure luck of the wood... the next two will be from a second provider I've come ot really appreciate... as I haven't thrown a single block away (yet!)

enjoy and as Love says.. smoke in peace

Your style of rustication reminds me a lot of a Savinelli Roma.

That makes sense. I'm a big S'nelli fan. It wasn't intentional but probably came about by osmosis.

Very nice. And like JMG said, it reminds me a great deal of the rustication on my Savinelli 'Madison'. Great work.

I think there's a bit too much radius at the back of the bowl where it joins the shank. The stem saddle, as others have mentioned, is too long. Real pipe makers turn integral tenons. :P

To keep your shank and stem round, sand them smooth, turn the stem 1/4 turn, sand them smooth, turn the stem 1/4 turn, sand them smooth, etc. Just make sure you finish with the stem properly aligned.

Cool buddy. Thank you.

Are you talking about the curve downward towards the stem?

I'm talking about where the shank joins the bowl. That area needs to be tightened up. Not so much the shank spreading into the bowl. More definition.

No excuses! :P I turned my first 150 tenons or so with one of those tenon turners.

So take off a little more at the junction on the back side of the bowl?
