While making my last pipe I put together a picture tutorial of the process.

I did this with the intention of posting it on the wood turners forum that I am a member of because there seems to be a little bit of curiosity about how pipes are made and whether or not a wood lathe is used.

I has occurred to me, however, that in my 6 months of pipe making I have not run across a similar tutorial on the Web.

So I decided to post a link here to see if any new pipe makers might be interested or benefit from it.

Clearly I am no expert pipe maker, but I think there is enough good information in this tutorial to get someone started in the craft.

Please let me know what you think and if there is value here for other newbies like myself.

For drilling, keep the lathe speed as slow as possible. This is especially important for the spade bit.

For the off center turning the lathe speed should be dictated by the skill of the turner. I, honestly, don't remember what speed I had the lathe running. I tend to adjust the speed to where I am comfortable and go with it. For off center turning you want enough speed that the chisel won't get caught in the void. Remember, faster turning will tend to give you a better surface off the tool, but also make catches more spectacular.

Am I the only one that am not able to load the whole thing? For me the site only shows one page, or so, of the tutorial. And I really would like to read this since I bought myself a lathe looking thing the other day...

Anyone who can't read the document is welcome to send me their email address. I will happily send you a copy of the document in Microsoft Word. I think I can get the document in Adobie if you can't open a MS Word file. (Also, the picture quality in the MS Word file is better.)

Great document. I would put more emphasis to the fact that it is targeted to intermediate to advance wood turners, but other than that, great doc.

Thanks for posting that. I'm working on a metal lathe, but that that gives me some good ideas for setting up a steady rest and working more free hand off that when I need to.
