Post by SimeonTurner »

Im finishing up a couple of final pipes before I fly out to Chicago, and last night I was putting the finishing touches on a really beautiful one. I had the stem almost done, and went to put the bend on it. Turns out I had sanded it just a tiny bit too thin, and the heat caused the airway to buckle. Now instead of hitting another pipe this morning, I get to start a new stem and hope I can shape it up properly without altering what was basically a finished shank.

In Chicago, let's take him behind the tent and thrash him.

oooh ouch.

Still doesnt beat my all time best stem bending story, was heating one of my Ivory stems to bend it and i soon learned that you have to be very careful how hot you get it, too hot and it will bubble like acrylic and too cold and it has the texture more like fudge, well i had it too cold, tried too hard to bend and it just split in half, didnt crack or make a noise it just came away with a grainy fudge like texture. I was not too happy :(

Anyway i will give you a hug and make it all better at the weekend and I am going to give that markle git a darn good telling off!

Well, the good news is I managed to shape a new stem, and the pipe looks great.

The bad news? Apparently now I have a hug coming to me from Chris...is there such a thing as British cooties?

Hey Bruce,
Don't forget, I'm tall, fairly thin, and have a British accent. Got it?

Forgive me for being ... my usual self, I guess  , but it sounds like a personal problem to me.
It does, however, give me the opportunity to comment about a type of statement I have seen form various sources at various times which can be helpful to remind you to keep your ship wired tight at all times, mister,
....but don't worry about it too much, it can be disabling. :)

I shot the last pipes for Chicago this afternoon, and figured I'd share the some pics of the pipe that caused all this trouble and led to Ernie impersonating Chris to avoid getting thrashed by Bruce. :)

The sad thing is, this pipe started out as a sandblasted cutty, but the stem redesign led to some major shape changes. :P

Simeon I hate to shatter your illusion but that is NOT a sandblasted cutty  when will they learn...
Beutifull pipe.. nice lines.. Is that ping pong ivory?? the only critique i can give is the stem witch shoud be bent a bit more fluedly and its just a tad to long in my taste..But its an easy fix just make a new one 3rd time is a charm :D
Smoke in peace!!

Simeon,
Hideous!
I'm going to look you up in Chicago, take the pipe down to Ruthlesshamburger's pipe making class and sandblast the crap out of what you call a pipe, stem and all.
Mr. Geiger is correct. The stem is too long, the bend looks as crooked as a witch's nose and your eye for symmetry is worse than mine. But..............not too bad for a cutty variant interpretation.
See 'ya in a while.

Depending where the collapsed airway lies on your stem you might rescue it. If is is close to the bit you certainly would not want to try this or some chomper will put his teeth through the thin part If, however it is closer to the tenon end, try applying heat to the collapsed part. I take a bic lighter and pass it back and forth along the collapsed airway. It will pop right out. Done correctly and with a little practice it is invisible. bob gilbert
