Something Crooked This Way Comes

Post by bandkbrooks »

I have a crooked mortise (coming in at an upward angle). The stummel is shaped. What on earth can I do now?

You can put it on a pin and chuck it in your lathe and reface the shank end, if a flush fit is the problem.

If the stem fits flush and is just coming off the shank at the wrong angle, there's not much you can do.

Ok here is what I'm working with:

Image
Blue line represents current air hole and mortise depth/angle

Here's the game plan for the change. Shorten the shank to just below the current mortise which will bring it into billiard proportions.

Green represents the "perceived" air hole angle.

You could try tapering the shank a bit more and putting a slight bend in the stem. Make it sort of a Bing!

I thought about that too. The mortise just puts the stem at such a horrendous angle though. It's almost like a dog leg...

What about using a 5/32'' aluminum tenon after I cut off the existing mortise? That way I wouldn't have to cut a new mortise. I assume I would still counter sink the shank at the mortise. Any guidance here it welcomed.

Whack a stem in it, designate a shop pipe and move on to the next one, these things happen its all part of the learning process :)

Oh it's already been delegated to my hands only. I'm using it as a study in how to correct mistakes/salvage a pipe. It's the tinkerer in me. Plus Im waiting on more briar. Lol
