Another new one, my first try with bamboo.

Post by aaron »

This is my first try with bamboo, I bought it at wal-mart- they had it for sale in the craft section for people to make bag handles out of. I realize it is kind of rough, Tomorrow I am going to put a vulcanite insert between the bamboo and the stummel. I think that may make it look a little more ballanced.

Cool looking pipe. Pic is kinda small though. I wish I could see more detail.

Cool! I'll have to take a look at that bamboo the next time in the Wal-Mart. I may have been spoiled though - Todd Johnson's bamboo is the only stuff I've ever used....

I will take another picture of it soon. I put another insert between the bamboo and the bowl and also worked on that connection to make it look better. Then I made the bowl a much nicer brown color. I think it looks much better now. NOTE TO ALL: What do you use as tubing inside the bamboo? i used a rod from my local woodcraft store that is supposed to be used in making pens. The rod is brass, and you sure can taste it. I really need to use something else, but that was good enuff for this pipe because I was really just expironmenting with the bamboo seeing how it works. :D

Some makers line the entire length with stainless steel tubing. Others just use the tubing at either end of the bamboo, and leave the middle "virgin". Obviously, lining the entire length adds weight - but it also adds rigidity and strength.

Brass is not a good idea, as you found out.

would aluminum work? I found some aluminum tubing last night and thought about replacing the brass with it.

MacQueen Pipes lines the stems of some of their wood-stemmed pipes with aluminum. I have no experience with aluminum though.

Yeah, brass is also somewhat poisonous to smoke from IIRC. I don't know if it's also poison to pass smoke *through* though.

aaron,

Are you sure it is not the bamboo that you are tasting? The stuff from WalMart is VERY varnished for use as purse handles and such.

I think brass is commonly used in high grade bamboo pipes, so I would be surprised if that was the source of the bad taste. I'd certainly like to find out though.

Out of the nine bamboo pipes I have staring at me on my rack now six have brass tenons. I don't taste it at all.

That is interesting... Maybe it is not the brass that I tasted. I don't think it was the bamboo though. I sanded all the varnish off and the rod goes all the way through. No smoke or moisture touches the bamboo= and it never got that hot either.

Aaron

It has an aluminum rod inside the brass rod now. It should be better.
