this is the link for a ruthenberg on ebay. this finish is something more than just a sandblast finish. anyone know how to get this look?
it looks very similar to what wallenstein does with some of his pipes. i believe he calls his the 'driftwood' finish.
any ideas would be appreciated.

Looks like sandblasting to me. You can get similar if you use a super fine media at high pressure and hold the gun rather far from the pipe.

Fine media and you are looking at endgrain rather than growth rings on the sides of that pipe - it's a crosscut ebauchon.

I don't know, but it's freakin' beautiful.
the Ruthenberg is a cross grain blast.

Done with a bifurcated autoflagelator. I had one, then lost it somehow in a move. Worked great...

Look's like a beat up 60's hippy bus to me.
yet the texturing of the pipe is neat!

Whoa!!!
I like it, but the last time I saw anything like that there were a few micrograms of d-lysergic acid diethylamide involved...
OVER 20 years ago, I hasten to add. I think... Oh, hey, is that Jefferson Airplane I hear? Duuuuuuuuuuuude, I think I can feel the colors! mmmmm, colours....

adlai,
It is true it is just a sandblast finish on a crossgrain piece of briar. I have been doing it for years like that on crossgrains.
