Walnut for Shank Extension?

Post by marks »

I've got some walnut, and was wondering if anyone has ever used it for a shank extension. If so, what were your results and/or opinions for this purpose?

I personally think walnut is more pretty than it is strong.

I make rifle stocks and pistol grips as well .. and I use walnut for that....

Thing about walnut is it splits easily along the grain..... I also would be concerned about how quickly the mortise would wear out .. or worse.. break.

I would definately only use it "cross-grain" for what you are looking at.

some days it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps.
