dremel tool to cut the V shape on a mouthpiece

Post by ND Pipes »

somewhere i have seen a tool that is holding the dremel while cutting the V shape opening on a mouthpiece - not sure if the dremel was steady and mouthpiece was going back and forht while the bit was cutting the opening or it was the other way arround...
... can anyone help me find it again - a link or something... thank you ...

To make the slot, I use this one:

Check out TJ's sticky "hand cut stems without a lathe" I think he describes in detail the process you're speaking of. It's in the stems section. Hope this helps

ermmm... i thought it might be not clear enough...
....
o.k. lets put it this way...
i have the tool that goes into the dremel... but would like to make a jig that will hold the dremel in a position and that will move the mouthpiece (that is also in some kind of holder) in order that a rotating dremel tool cuts the V slot allways the same way - so, either the dremel itself is steady or the mouthpiece is steady... and i would not use the tool Eder proposed but a bit for drilling and milling - something like the second tool on the picture from the link bellow....

i have seen that kind of jig where you have those two in place and move one of them to create a perfect V.... but i can't find where it is... :(

i think it was a home page from two guys - maybe brothers or something... not sure...
they had few shots of this jig... thought to make one of these to mill that V more precisely and into a V rigth away....

Imo Jigs are limiting better to learn to do it freehand, it gives more freedom. The brothers do not use this jig anymore.

Use a good quality 1.8mm drill for steel as a cutter small Dremel mill bits never seem to have the correct lenght to cut the slot

Er.

You have to be very careful when you apply pressure to the bit, if you are using a small one, like 1/16" or so. They snap fairly easily or bind if you are in acrylic. Ebonite is easier to "grind". There are also tiny rasp-like bits that are more suited to "sideways" pressure.

i quit trying to mush the slot open with a bit and just use a modified skillsaw to open it up. That said, I never had any trouble with using a drill bit to open it up....I just never could get the control I wanted from it.

To each his own.

I've been using a 1/16 bit for seven years with no problems on both acrylic and ebonite. I snap one about once a year, but I don't consider that a problem. They come in two-packs. :P

that is the same thing i wanted to use... a small bits that are kind of milling or rasp- like removing the material...
i have them...

i tried the modified saw blade (probably this is a blade from that skillsaw - not sure about the name for it)..... don't like the result - would like to get a nice edge on sides that is round not rectangular... not nice, or i don't use it good i don't know .....
..
having control - that is why i wanted to make that jig - to hold the dremel and a mouthpiece better - to get that control... doing it with hand was o.k. but i want to make one as the other if possible like i want them to have.....
that is why i started the thread .... :)

have to thank everyone for the replies... still not sure what to do... right now using that modified saw blade is not enough for me... have to use something better than the blade and a small rasp to correct after the saw...
oh boy....

Daniel, I drill one hole in and hit the airway (or you could use a long bit and drill out the back end of the airway). I drill a 1/2" deep hole on either side of this, use the drill to remove the little bit of material between, and suddenly, I have a deep but rough slot. Razor-saw (fits a hobby knife) removes the rest of the material and about 10 minutes with an oval needle file ... done. Deep, clean, smooth, and no scary aspect.

Yes, I thought you lived over here due to the quote you use.. my bad.. the site is also in english, just click the EN button. If your in the states I'd look for a gold smith web site. but Fischer has tiny ones... I had to ask since I couldn't find it on thier site.. but I got one that's .8mm and a second thats 1.5mm

More than happy with them.
