Flaw inside chamber...what to do?

Here's a perfect example. All I can tell you is that this piece was going to be rather special, but now it's mine.
The arrow points to a minuscule hairline crack.
Just look at the photos.

It reared its ugly head after removing the undercoat stain, which was dark.
I considered shortening the bowl height, but that would have made the pipe look like one of Rod Davies squashed things, but not as nice as one of Walle's whatchamacallits.

I still think you could knock it down and save the piece (after all, you are the mighty Bruce Weaver, no?) but I certainly understand reluctance to "bother". It's kind of hard to re-calibrate a piece when it didn't go the way you wanted the first time, and feel good about it.

Reason I asked about the "when" was I got some briar that is not as dry as I think it should be and I'm wondering if I am in danger of having things crack if I cut the stuff into a pipe just now.

So, where does one get/make bowl coating?
Are there different kinds? If so, which is the best?
How is it applied?

There are two common kinds:

Grocery store blend:
- sour cream
- buttermilk
- activated charcoal
- sometimes fine pumice

Pharmacy blend:
- sodium silicate
- activated charcoal
- fine pumice

The sodium silicate (waterglass) and pumice can be found at www.chemistrystore.com. Activated charcoal is as near as the stomach care section of your local grocery store - usually sold in caplets that you break open (or order a tub from the pharmacy or online).

Either way, it's not available pre-mixed.

I almost never use the stuff myself. But fun to try out. And by ordering it I didn't have to go thru the trouble of making it myself. I'm a terrible cook...

Welcome to the club,i also have the same stuff catching dust on a shelf in my workshop...i just didn't have the heart to use it. Would be such a pity losing the natural flavour of the pipe by coating it.
Only as a first aid kit perhaps...

I would suggest getting the items Kurt mentioned and mixing your own. I tried the pre-mix a few times and the coating turned white after about 2 weeks... ended up sanding it all the way down and using a self mix.

Unfortunately I just ended up throwing it away
