Spoon Bits

Post by BDP »

Hello Everyone,

Over the past two years I've received sporatic inquiries on spoon bits for freehanding tobacco chambers. Lately these have increased, and so I want to put out a feeler to see how much interest there is. It is not cost effective to do a set here and there, so if there is sufficient interest to generate the quantities I need to bring the price down, I will do another run of the best sizes. Let me know by replying here on the forum.

Happy Holidays to You All,

I guess it hinges on what the price would be, but I'm certainly interested. Thanks Brad.

Gentlemen,
Possibly you don't understand.
I believe what Brad is looking for are firm commitments. These tools are superb and the pricing WILL be MUCH better than you will find anywhere else.
This is rather generous of Brad to do this.
If you intend to be a serious pipe maker, I strongly suggest you consider his offer.

I understand; I just need a ballpark figure before I can commit. I believe he'll give us the best price possible, but I've also seen spoon bits that are extremely expensive and I don't want to say that I'm on board and then back out because I can't afford it.

I have a set of Brad's bits and they're superior for freehand drilling. Make no mistake, these are not going to be $20 drill bits, they're custom made of hardened tool steel and will last forever.

If you're thinking of doing freehand drilling after your pipe is shaped, these are the bits you want.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to start a cascading list of "I'll take 'em if they're under $10" posts; I've seen mention of Brad's spoon bits before on the forum and on Stephen Downie's site. I completely understand what these bits are and what they're used for. I'm looking years into the future when I'll hopefully be doing some shape-first pipemaking; bits of this quality seem like they've been hard to come by and I wanted to make the investment while it was available. Christmas is coming up as well as one of my daughter's birthday though, so I just wanted to know a really general area for the pricing before I tell Brad to go ahead and sign me up.

Everyone,

I'm looking for those who are interested, and need to make about 100 pieces altogether (sets of 3 or 4 sizes). If we can get about 25 people interested, then I will price the job out and let you all know a pretty close ballpark figure. I am not looking for comittment at this point, just interest. We're about half way there already....

Spoon Bits

Brad, thanks for clarifying and making this offer. Just to be clear, my interest is more solid than my first post may have suggested. I do have a limit on how much I can spend, but I've priced spoon bits before and I know we aren't talking $20/bit prices.

Bruce, Kurt, thanks for your endorsements. They are very helpful for those of us that haven't used these types of bits before.

I'm interested in possibly splitting a set with someone. Last go-round I did that, and I'd like to add another size or two to my toolbox.
