This PDF was originally intended as a thread but posting it turned out to be more difficult than I thought. The pdf contains the basics of pipemaking with lots of pictures, I don't think I left out anything vital but you never know.

The link should open the file in a new window/tab and can then be saved to your computor.

really awesome
definitely
"incomplete" but the amount of pictures makes it really shine. Maybe some more stummel shaping would make it better, but this is quality for beginners, like me

so, who's the incomplete idiot....?

Well done though. Very nice and helpful for any beginner, I would guess. Haven't looked closer at it though.

Thanks DMI. Some very useful reference. I kept a copy, and I'm sure it will be helpful to many, and not just new pipemakers.
I read that Sixten Ivarsson also worked in pipe repairs before he began pipemaking, and that it influenced his pipemaking a lot, knowing what not to do.
I also read your post about the problems with cleaning bamboo shanks. That sort of info is also very useful.

Thank you all for your comments, the bulk of the text was done in one two hour session, it then took two months to finish. I thought the title was pretty good, just insert comma's where you like to change the meaning.

I tried making one of those the other day, question; how do you keep the sandpaper from tearing? Cut it as wide as the holes are deep? That's the only thing I can think of.

Carsten, that is less of a copy than a whole new thing as it appears to be for clamping the tennon while working on the stem, nice idea.

Dixie try using emery cloth instead of sandpaper, it's flexibillity is what makes it so good for doing round and curved things.
