Manowar-Disc (No, not the heavy metal rock band!)

Post by SWM »

Hello again everybody,

here's another pipe I made earlier this summer. This is a real Disc with a grain a little bit like a manowar. It is somewhat like an ancestor of the South Tirolian Lumber-Disc (which is why I chose it as a second pipe to present here) and if you guess how the drilling went you probably also know where part of the inspiration came from.

Starting with the front view...

...to the rear...

...and now let's turn this thing around...

Other side...

Laid flat...

That's why it's a disc:

This grain reminded me of the manowar...

Sunny side up - can these eyes lie...?

Bottom(s)...

You can tell by my dirty Fingernails I really worked on this pipe...

My baby  ;) :

I hope you enjoyed the pictures and again I appreciate your comments!

Best,
Steffen

Steffen, that certainly does have a fantastic grain and figure to match! Is that an insert and separate from the stem? Either way, I like the insert made flush with the shank, a nice touch of detail there! Well done!

I can only say: wow! I really, really like this pipe! You manage to make the very best of the graining. It's just stunning. Although I will look closer and see if I can see any faults I can comment on....

Please tell me you make filter pipes as well....? :D

Hi and thanks for the comments!

Nate, yes, that's an ebonite insert. It was fun making and of course it was the only way the drilling could be done (at least with my tools since I can't do curved drillings...).

DaGamba, sure there are faults! There's a small gap where the stem enters the insert and the lip is slightly too thick - I will have to correct this occasionally. I make both, filter and no filter, depending on the shape or on request.

Best,

Steffen

Well that is really nice, great job on it! Did you remove material and then insert the ebonite before drilling the block? THen final shaping after drilling?

I roughly shaped the pipe to set the angles, then I drilled the hole for the insert with a forstner. After that I did the drilling, inserted the ebonite and redrilled through the ebonite onto the original drilling (the hole) from a steeper angle. Last I smoothend the point where the two drillings meet with a small dremel bit so a pipe cleaner will pass with ease.

After that came the final shaping and so on...

Like I said, it feels good when your thougts and the planning work out and you get it done the way you wanted. :D

I agree, it is a good day when the planning comes to fruition!! Thanks for the notes on how you accomplished your unique insert!

Hi Nate,

well the insert method is by far unique - there's a guy who does that quite frequently... look to the east...

Love the pipes.

So what would a Rammstein look like? Yes the heavy metal band.

This is an older pipe (summer 2009), the pictures were taken even before buffing and waxing...

I named it "In der Halle des Bergkönigs" (In the Hall of the Mountain King) because the grain looks somewhat like stalaktites and jewels on the walls and ceiling of a misterious cave. It was inspired by both Grieg's "Per Gynt Suite" (title) and Tolkiens "Lord of the Rings". Looks a bit like the axe of Gimli the dwarf to me...

Best and thanks,

Steffen

Mmmmmm, maybe a bit more Gwar with the dwarves and axes.

I think your career may be a bit longer than Ibsens' though, as I remember he was a one hit wonder because the opera never really caught on, something to do with his being ahead of his time and his work being to demanding on 19th century theatre technology.

Today we have the technology but few have the inspiration.

David.

Uh-oh. I started thinking, what would a Rammstein pipe might look like, and it gave me a few ideas. I might have to explore that in the next few days!

Now Kurt don't start nicking other peoples ideas, you know what happens when you do that.

How would you include the flamethrower and mortars?

Interesting combination though, post punk techno metal with an industrial overtones.

I'm not sure. Rusty iron, leather, zippers, fire, chain maille, nudity, and pyrotechnics....

We shall see. :D

Hmm...a steampunk pipe? sounds interesting...

Don't worry David that's perfectly allright - glad I inspired you!

There's a pipemaker in Germany - Volker Bier - he grades his pipes with the names of his favorite hardrock and heavy metal bands. That's cool but also a little problematic if the customer has a different idea about which band is the better  .

It would be also interesting to think of a pipe that could be the equivalent of speed or trash metal (we'd best leave death metal a little bit on the side...)...
