I was wondering if there is anybody out there using metal arresters.
I'm not sure if you call them as arresters or filters or something else.
Anyway, this is what I'm talking about:

That's a very good question. I have them on some estate pipes, but have not idea where to purchase them to repair or replace.

I have never understood the point of those things. I have a pipe with one on there and it's just irritating. What am I missing?

Tim, in my experience the purpose of those is to cause condensation and thus gurgling which can't be fixed with a pipe cleaner, which quickly leads to a mouthfull of pipe goo.

I think they're meant to act as a device to test the intelligence of pipe smokers, i.e. if you leave it in there you're not very smart. Or maybe it's if you actually buy a pipe with one of those in it you're not very smart? I can say from sad personal experience that the one on top is from a Kaywoodie and the one on the bottom is from a Dr. Grabow.

Edited to add: I've always heard them called "stingers," except for one guy who called them "That !%@%! little aluminum thingy in there that keeps clogging my pipe."

I remove them and put them aside somewhere, in case I sell the pipe and the collector is crazy that way. Some quality pipes used such gimmickery including Dunhill's goofy tube and Comoy's.

Here those stingers are called "arrefecedores" which translate to "coolers".
The only ones that I allow to stay inside my pipes are the ones that don't stop a pipe cleaner (seen on Chacon Cordoba), all the others are removed.
They might cool the smoke somewhat, maybe during 2 or 3 seconds.

Sometime back when I used to refurb a lot of estates, I would always remove the "stingers" and throw them away with malice aforethought. However, some collectors of name brands want all the original stuff intact.

The stingers on many Kaywoodies are almost integral to the stem, so I used to just cut them off flush to the tenon end. I sold one such to a guy, and boy did I get a bollocking from him when he received the pipe. I managed to cool him down by refunding a few bucks.
