Zinsser Spray Shellac

Just a quick report on spray shellac.

It's a little heavier cut than I might prefer, but the control one has with the spray is pretty nice - no blotches or wipe marks or anything (this is avoided with a thin cut of shellac). It dries in about 5 minutes - carried by a nasty combo of meths, acetone, propane and butane. Quite probably I should not have been smoking while using it.

Treating the rusticated sections was a snap though and for a real craggy pipe this stuff might just be the ticket.

Here's the pipe - sanded to 500, sprayed, sanded at 800, sprayed, and then the tripoli process and carnauba.

That looks very good. I'll try that sometime. I suppose that Zinsser is way different than other brands. Is it the "premium" spray out there?

The canned spray shellac is too thick a cut for use on smooth finishes, in my opinion. By the time you've evened the coat with a buffing wheel you've either removed everything, or gone so far as to wear the soft grain, relieving the growth rings. You're better off using your own mix for them. The canned shellac is perfect for rusticated and blasted pipes though. A thin coat leaves a pipe shiny and with less coloring issues than when "painting" on other shellacs.

Yeah I'd be happier with this stuff if it was thinned by half or more, for sure. It takes a VERY light hand. Luckily, I am the spray master extraordinare, and can control even the meanest of fossilized Tremclad cans!

I wound up spraying it on, and taking a cloth full of spirits to the pipe and wiping down the excess right away.

So I'll use this on rustics I think, but it's not a timesaver on a smooth.

Flix, Zinsser was the only shellac at all that Home Depot had. So it seemed a logical choice.

Gotta get to Lee Valley or somewhere that sells flakes. My pre-mixed orange is from 1922 or so.

Wait a minute.... D'oh!

Yes, Tritrek, that pipe deserved a better fate than to have a snaky line of pits along the shank and the bottom of the bowl. So you are actually seeing the tail end of a rusticated snake the wraps around the other side of the shank. But what the hell else am I gonna do? Little black spots I can live with, but little open pits...

The price is great here, unfortunately, in flake form. Melting a ton of flakes and making it a bar is more work/time than I need to invest. Is there a bar supplier with this good a price? I'm running out of carnauba.
