Post photos of your latest work

Makers new and old enjoy sharing the fruits of their hard work with others. While the ulitmate fulfillment of that pleasure is with the smoking of the well appreciated pipe, photos serve as another (if lesser) form of sharing and appreciating.

Post your pipes in this forum for sharing them with others, and to solicite the opinions and thoughts of other makers.

I have relayed this story many times, but I am reminded of it once again and feel it prudent to relay in this post. At the 2003 Chicago show I asked Tom Eltang if he would look at my pipes when he had a spare moment, and give me his thoughts on them. He agreed to do so and asked me a very pertinent and wise question. He asked, " Do you want me to be polite or tell the truth?"

Let face it, pipes made by new pipe makers typically look a lot like pipes made by new pipe makers. Some people want to advance beyond that, and some people are very happy to just play with the briar whenever they get the chance and are not interested in setting the world on fire with their work. Neither is somehow better than the other, but one mind set needs to hear the truth and the other does not. Depending on which category you are in, it would be wise to mention your desire when you post your photos. Are you wanting to take your pipes to the next level, so to speak, or are you satisfied to continue to make pipes as you currently are making them?

Do you want the truth, or do you want people to be polite?

Of course, civility throughout this board should be observed, and both politeness and the truth can be combined. That is not to say though, that the truth might not sting a little. Please be warned that if you ask for the truth, you might get it! Hopefully all involved will maintain an attitude of helpfulness in the process because ulitmately the goal is that we all become better pipe makers.

Kirk,

As of now, the only way to do it is to already have the image on the web somewhere and then reference in you post with the Image

removing the (*) in the above line to make it correct:

Da dum...a lovely cherry wood pipe! (I hope it was OK to use that picture!)

That help?

(I promise, I am trying to make it easier.)

Woohoo!

A little tip, now that Kirk has it all figured out and doesn't need it. If you right-click on a photo and hit "properties" you can find the URL to the picture itself. That is the link you need in the [Img] tag.

Here's my first:

Image
(see other angles at: http://www.scofield.cc/pipes/)

I would like the "harsh" opinion please. This is what I know about what I did wrong:

Did not sand enough. Personaly I'm not happy with a 400 grit finish. Next time I'll go 600.

A few errors were when I put it in the drill press and dented the wood after it's final sanding. Then sanding it with the 400 grit and thinking it was "gone" only to have the stain and wax bring it out again, you can see those pictured in a few pics with the rest of 'em.

Angles. My angles are off in the stummel to shank transition and in the position of the mortise (it's off center on the shank). Also the shank appears to be a bit "crooked" when compared to the rest of the pipe.

Anything else anyone can see?[/img]

Two makers have separately, given me the single best piece of advice on shapes, in different words. Kent Rasmussen told me that he wanted his shapes to be "cut to the bone." Tom Eltang told me that to make great shapes you have to have the courage to keep cutting even when the grain looks good.

The grain on your pipe looks great, but I'll be there's still a beautiful, slender, freehand Dublin sitter in that block waiting to get out.javascript:emoticon(':)') Or, a flaw the size of a bean. That's the problem, isn't it?

Yes.

1. Post the pic to the gallery
2. Right click the photo and hit "properties"
3. Highlight and copy the "target"
4. Now paste that into your post with the [Img] tags.
