Looks like it was sandblasted, stained, then lightly sandblasted again.

Pretty much what Kurt said: sandblasted, contrast stained very dark brown, pencil blasted and an overstain of gold or yellow. Beautiful work and very unique.

Reminds me a bit of some of the blasting JT Cooke does.

Somewhere, maybe in the gallery section, Senatorov indicated that he uses a small-orifice sandblaster that he designed himself. He also said it take a few hours to do a pipe.

I've got one of the Cyclone pencil blasters - but honestly, it doesn't move enough air at high enough a rate to be effective on most woods. You can use it to add some detail, but I can see how it would take hours to be effective just by itself. I've seen some pencil blasters with an interesting pressure pot arrangement though which I'd like to try - but they're not cheap.

As for me it could be rustication, not sandblast. I'll ask Sergey how he did it.

Rustication i do not do, it is a pity to me briar:).

PS After seeing tricky rustications from yabuhebi and YakSlon it's hard for me to decide )
