I think that could be said for almost every profession...its lots of hard work, there are often hard mistakes involved and you pay your dues early on....AND hanging out the the big guys speeds up the learning curves for sure.

If I was younger guy, I would love to try and sell myself to a pipecarver in order to be his apprentice. I would work for room and board and free baccy. I am unsure if any carvers would be game for that but I know a few who are overwhelmed with special order requests. I'd probably start out as "Buffer-boy" or "Stainman" or "Floorsweeper"

Anyway, it ain't all about glory and money...if a guy enjoys it, thats a plus.
