Questions about the "twisted shank"

Hi everyone-

For a long time now I have been trying to figure out how to create a "twisted shank" such as many Radice pipes tend to have. In case you aren't sure what the heck I'm talking about, here is a picture of the type of shank I'm referring to (found on google):

Is this technique acheived using a lathe, or is it necessary to hand carve a corkscrew shape such as that by hand?

Thanks for the advice!

I make that type of fluting on knife handles, but only by hand. I use round "chain saw" files because they have a constant diameter, i.e. no taper. It looks like that pipe has two flutes.

You draw the spiral where you want it with pencil, then go at it with files. If you have a steady hand, you could probably manage it with an appropriately shaped dremel bit.

My thoughts exactly. Clean the thing up after filing with sandpaper wrapped on a dowel...

As you can see from Part 2, the lathe is just used to hand rotate the workpiece.

Since a knife handle/pipe shank is somewhat smaller than that finial, I use cotton thread, attached with a tiny drop of super glue, to initially mark out the spiral.

That video is really helpful! I'll start practicing on some dowels today! :)

I thought I would return to this thread to share my success with the twisted shank attempt! Thanks to everyone who contributed to helping me figure it out!

This pipe is a gift for a good friend who is getting married next week. I'm giving it to him at his bachelor party tomorrow, so I feel safe posting this today knowing there is about a .0001% chance he would see it. :)
