Cleaning bamboo

Anyone found a slick way to remove the faintly blackish/gray areas that well-smoked bamboo often develops after a while? My usual procedure (light scraping and a weak bleach solution on a Q-tip) only works so-so. It seems the darkening often goes deeper than it looks.
