I apologize ahead of time if all of you have covered this in the past. I am a newbie to the forums here .
I emailed Tyler about this recently and he was kind enough to offer some info and advice. I would like to get input from the forum on whether you pre-carb your bowls, and if so, what is your favorite recipe or technique.
I precarb all my pipes unless someone asks for one without the precarb. I use the buttermilk/sour cream/charcoal recipe. About half and half buttermilk/sour cream then enough charcoal to make it black.

It's a mix of pumice and activated charcoal in roughly equal amounts, and enough waterglass to make it roughly the consistency of latex interior paint. I know some folks keep a container of this stuff around and just ad to it as it gets low, but mine seems to harden up on me before too long, so I just mix a small amount when I have a batch of pipes ready to be coated.
Out of curiosity.......why use pumice? I'm guessing it adds additional roughness to the coating when it is dried. Or is it something necessary in the waterglass recipe?

Yep. just an aid to make a rough surface for cake formation.
