Thanks for the replies. I went to Sally today. Do they ever have boards marked by grit size and do they have many sizes? They do. I found one marked 8000 on one side and 12000 on the other, in all fairness, it was labeled for buffing use but it is still an emery board. Wow! I now have a selection of many boards rangeing from 100 to 800 grit and of course the afore mentioned 8000/12000.

FWIW, I've been filing for ten years now, and using a pair of knives (One long-bladed carving knife, and one short-bladed woodcarver's blade) for three pipes, and can definitely say that scraping has sped up my work. Just as good in quality, less time - a good thing.

And on this day, low did Trever say unto his flock: FWIW, I've been filing for ten years now, and using a pair of knives (One long-bladed carving knife, and one short-bladed woodcarver's blade) for three pipes, and can definitely say that scraping has sped up my work. Verily did we faithful pipe carvers add to the Book of Talbert.

You're a very silly person, Nick.

And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy." And the Lord did grin and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and large chu...TreverT wrote:

"Skip a bit, brother"
Right... And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it." Amen.
Who needs to read the script, man? I probably couldn't manage it today, but there was a time when I could nearly quote that freaking movie end to end (I can likely still do that with Star Wars). We watched MP &THG nightly in high school, it seems like, back in the early days of HBO when they ran the same four movies every night for months on end.
Oh wait, they still do that now...
I've always had a gift for remembering movie lines, though. Can't remember shit from yesterday's French study, but I'm all over obscure genre movies for perfect recall.
"You'll never get credit for MY discovery. Who's going to believe a talking head. Get a job in a sideshow!"
Then again, I suppose it was natural for me to remember that, after the results of this quiz. I was so proud...
I am Dr. Herbert West, from "Reanimator." I'm right. You're wrong.

There's a good bit of that movie that I can quote from my head, but there's just as much that I can't always remember, considering all the other movie/book/tv show quotes I'm wasting space storing in my brain. I can quote Godfather 1 and 2 pretty much verbatim.. people won't even watch them with me anymore.

Ah ha! Makes perfect sense. Obviously, I have only ever used heavier knives for the process.munkey wrote:If a thin blade is used, like a standard x-acto, it will skip as you scrape and mar up the stem.Tyler wrote:It's unclear to me how scraping could actually leave marks, but I trust that it has for some.

I perpetually get either Herbert West or Ash on those things.
