Calabash Gourds

Post by bvartist »

Hi All,

Anyone know a source for buying Calabash gourds? I'd like to try and make a calabash with Meer bowl for my own smoking. For some reason they've always held a fascination for me!

Thanks in advance!

They come from South Africa I think. I've also heard they are hard to come by. Not alot of demand for the gourds anymore. Try asking Johan Slabert or Robert Schrier.

I found this: http://www.geocities.com/pipetabor/cala ... ash_e.html

Thanks Nick! I'll give those two a a try and see if they can do anything for me! I've read through that webpage before. Very interesting how that guy made his pipe! Very interesting use of "found" materials.

I've also read that growing the calabash for pipe making is very labor intensive, and with the diminishing market, there aren't many growers that see any return on their time and investment.

I think the calabash will be an interesting project if I can find the materials!

Thanks again

David
