Just out of curiosity, which of the two items that shows members online is accurate? Right now there is the "Who's online" block in the top left hand corner that currently says 9 members. Meanwhile if you go to the forum section and go to the bottom there is a block that says "Who's online" and it says 3.

I'm pretty sure that means 3 people are in the forum area, but does that mean that 6 people are just at the homepage or browsing the gallery, etc?

Correct. The module that displays the forum only counts people logged in and reading/posting in the Forum. The block on the right counts all users that may be perusing other areas of the site.
