Pipe Mud

Post by LexKY_Pipe »

Pipe mud -- I assume this is pipe makers "duct tape". Where do you buy it and where do you buy regular bees wax?

I'm afraid that you'll have to make your own pipe mud. It's a mix of cigar ash and water. I've never made it.

Bess wax can be had at a craft store, or you can buy beeswax candles.

Cigar and not pipe ash???

I assume you make it into a rather thick paste.

Yes, it is cigar ash, the reason being that it's 100% ash with no little hard bits.

Thick paste is correct, but like I said, I have never made it, so I'm not sure how thick.

Just drip water into the cigar ash a drop at a time until it is like mortar. Then it is right. Too watery, and you cannot shape it, too dry and it won't stick together.

This stuff is for repairing pipes that are starting to burn out, or building up the bottoms in pipes that need a higher heel (this is how I used it on a couple of pipes I bought years ago). It will need to dry for at least 24 hours, probably longer.

It is easy to form, and can be sanded, etc after drying. Sticks like glue once in the pipe, and can easily be reamed out if needed later.

Not recommended as a bowl coating, only for repairs on pre smoked pipes. Your pipe will taste like a stale cigar for several smokes, but that goes away rather quickly.

I use carbon and liquid glass for making a false break in, if it´s made thicker like sticky glue it makes a good repair for small errors in the drilling of the tobaccochamber.never tried it on surface errors might be alright when the pipe is rusticated.

Pipemanruss,

If you need some bees wax, let me know where to send it. I can send you some if you let me know your address. I guarantee it to be pure, since I harvest it myself.
