Linden wood

Hey guys, I haven't figured out where to source my wood from, and this whole lock-down thing is not really helping. i do however have a few blocks of Linden wood from previous projects.
does anyone know if I can make a usable pipe out of it? im still gonna use it just for the practice, but i couldn't not find anything about the quality of this wood except that it is considered a low grade firewood
furthermore, im trying to find a source of information about toxicities of clay, and which clay can be used to make bowls for pipes

I know nothing of Linden. However, Vermont Freehand is still shipping briar. Also Rawkrafted is a good source.

I made my first few pipes out of walnut and black locust because I had it lying around. Neither is ideal. The walnut smokes fine and does not seem to burn. They were fine for practice. So if you've got linden then give it a try.

As mentioned, getting briar is not a problem. It is not cheap, but eventually that's what you'll be working in the most. So might as well give it a try.

I can't imagine that toxicity would be an issue with most clay. I doubt there is anything as dangerous in clay as nicotine.

I’m in Sweden and cant buy briar within the country. But I’ve bought from germany and from Greece with no problem since it is within EU.

Linden wood is also called basswood and its great for carving, but I think would make a poor pipe. It is very porous and light.
If you can’t get briar, then olive or morta would be the other choices, followed by fruitwoods.

Bell forest is an excellent source of unique and exotic woods. They don't do briar, but if you are interested in other woods for pipes, ferrules, etc, they are a great source. They have the hardness, density, and health hazards of their woods listed, which can be useful as well. I have used them for a number of woodworking projects in the past.

I once made a basswod (linden, lime, etc) pipe. It's trash wood for that purpose. Great for utensils, carving of all types, and anything decorative. It has even, consistent grain, acceptably strong in several physical aspects (close to maple), and take an oil finish very well.

However, you will never get a shiny finish on it. It has a tendency to go up like a match, and burns through about as fast as pine. Any mortis drilled in it will change dimension almost immediately.
