Egg?

Post by JMG »

I guess this would be considered an egg shape. 5 1/2" long, 1 3/4" tall. Acrylic shank ring with teal ebonite stem. I left a little plateau showing on the rim. Still need to bowl coat and stamp it.

The ring is terribly too big and I think my stem is too long by maybe 1/2". Since losing my accessibility to sandblast I'm still struggling to find a rustication technique that I like. This one came out a little faux sandblast'ish, I may tinker with that process some more. Any thoughts on it?

Your critique is always much appreciated.

If you called that a tall author and told me it was a sand blast, I would go along with that. Ring size and stem length are not glaring faults in my opinion, and I would not have noticed if you hadn’t tagged them.

Thanks, Doc. I feel like my recent works look a little too “arts and crafts” when I’d really like to go for more whimsical yet elegant. I’ve really been liking Biftek’s style lately. If I could somehow produce a merge of his and Jesse’s work I’d be tickled pink.

George, you got any magic lines for me?

No magic lines. Shape-wise, I think you nailed it.

The only "I'm not sure" item is the width of the stem at the button. (Not sure because it depends on overall pipe size)

The me isn't a fan of ornamental ring-widgets (especially on classic shapes), colored stems (except tortoise shell), or the unfinished-looking finish, but those are more a matter of personal taste than right or wrong.

Good job!

^^^^This is why I make so many colored stems. I can see George across town rolling his eyes and asking "why?" every time. It's very very fun for me

Since this is something I struggle with myself:

I think the ring could be a bit smaller. It's a touch too wide (sticks off the pipe too much). Try sanding the next one down a bit more.
