A perfect pipe spotted in Chicago

Post by LatakiaLover »

They do exist.

I've held and inspected about a dozen over the years. All but one were never seen by the public (as far as I know), or offered for sale in the usual sense. They were famous-maker pieces which had been set aside because they were exceptional---heart-stopping wood that had received extra care, attention, and time---and then offered privately to select customers. Upper four and lower five figure prices were the rule.

The one that was offered to the public? I saw it 48 hours ago at the Chicago show.

Its maker? This forum's own Smoking Yeti, Micah Cryder.

An impossibly elegant, PERFECTLY executed horn that made me completely re-evaluate my lifelong disinterest in that shape.

Holy shit that kid is good.

The table of "publicly-available-grade" Bangs, Ivarssons, Chonowitsches, & etc. on display in the tower's penthouse suite down the hall---which I had examined only a few hours before seeing Micah's pipe---were sloppy in comparison. (Yes, I know what I'm saying, and will take whatever heat comes my way for doing so.) This horn was on the same level as the best of those living legend makers' "private-grade" work.

You new guys? Do a search for "The Smoking Yeti" on this board. That's him. Micah got his start here.

Tyler deserves another round of applause, I think. A standing ovation, in fact. :notworthy:

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming... (a.k.a. Go make another! )

Photos don't do it justice. Trust me.

The difference between a merely excellent pipe and a world-class one is that its lines are perfect from every possible angle, not just the static 90-degree side, top, bottom, front, and back views. As an object, they almost look alive.

This horn also had that "underwater" looking 3-D grain that cameras can't capture, and the gold contrast finish was positively luminous.

I believe that 100%. Some of these folks manage to get finishes with both high levels of chatoyancy and a gloss that you could swim in. Truly inspiring.

I shook Micah's hand...so I fully expect similar turnouts now. That's how it works, right?

I missed it, for which I am grateful, because I broke the bank on merely good pipes.
How did you get that photo Rick? I thought you weren’t there.

It was on his instagram/FB. Not only can I not make pipes that well, I can't take pics that well, either

So what you're saying essentially is 1 doughnut and two eggs make for perfect pipes, right?

The point of the circles is that they are computer generated. As perfect a curve as a hi-rez monitor will allow. And they fit like a glove.

Then there's the mirror-image angle of divergence of the red curves from the black ones.

Mr. Yeti did that completely by eye. No overlays, no projections, no CNC machines. And such mathematical elegance-of-line could be seen from EVERY angle when holding the pipe in hand.

It's actually kinda scary. (He might be a cyborg or something)

I am awed by two things here:
The pipe itself and the maker’s ability to produce it, and
The fact that George had the eye to spot the relationship of the cylindrical sections to the pipe.
What was the fate of the pipe?
