Good day all. I'm in the process of putting together a shaping wheel. I've got a VFD and Ironhorse 1/2 hp 9 lead AC motor. I've wired power to the VFD and have the power cord running from the VFD to the motor. I have wired the leads according to the low voltage diagram on the motor. However, I'm stuck on which leads to tie my hot and neutral wires to. My first attempt just gave me a hum.



Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not an electrician, but I've got a VFD working in my shop. With my VFD, all three wires from the VFD to the motor are hot, and there is no separate neutral between the VFD and the motor (in three phase, I guess, there is one hot wire at a time, and the power returns to the source over the ones that aren't hot.) You reverse the direction of the motor by switching the hot leads to turn on in a different order. Hopefully your VFD or motor manual would explain the specifics. Then the VFD gets regular 110V hot/neutral/ground from the source. Hopefully that helps you further.

Thanks Jeremiah. So the leads coming out of the VFD are wired to 1, 2, 3 and not 1, 2, ground...then wired to line 1, 2, 3? I've tried to go throug h the manual...but pretty esoteric for me. Does the motor need to be grounded?

If your VFD is like mine, the three leads from the VFD go to line 1, 2, and 3. No ground or neutral necessary. In a 3-phase system, the VFD turns each of the 3 leads on and off in sequence. The leads that are "off" function as the neutral/ground.

Still, before you turn it on, you should read enough to feel comfortable with what's going on. Or have someone who is comfortable with electricity take a look at it. I read through most of the 120 page manual that came with my VFD and talked with a couple electrician friends before I turned it on the first time.

Thanks again. I'm not the best with electricity. I learned the value of an Ohm meter after finding out the hard way that the hood on my stove is not on the circuit breaker labeled "kitchen."
