Forstner Bits for Squaring shank face and rod stock.

Does anyone know of a company out there that makes forstner bits without the point in the center that can be used for squaring rod stock? I bought one with a point, and ground the point off, but I think in doing so I compromised the effectiveness of the cutting surface, as it will cut on the edges, but makes a rough contact point where the point used to be, almost as if it is just burning the rod at that point since there no longer is a cutting surface there.

The center guide keeps them from wandering.

Why did you cut the point off? Having the center "punched" is never really a problem...

Drill a relief hole with a centre drill, same size are your airway.

I ground it off because it was a problem for facing rod stock. I don't have a lathe to make the face of the rod stock even, so use my drill press and a forstner bit to make it flush fitting before drilling my hole in the rod stock for the delrin rod, and then again when i do the other side of the rod stock for the airway. A forstner bit with a center guide would be fine for me to use on the side i am going to drill my delrin hole, but only if the center guide doesn't create a larger center hole than what i would use for the delrin, which is normally 5/16. The issue comes in to play when i try to use a forstner bit with a center guide on the face of the stem where my mouthpiece will be.

Any suggestions? Im not opposed to buying another bit if i have to, and maybe this is one of those circumstances where you learn by making mistakes.....

It's not really necessary to have the button side of the rod stock squared.

Perfect....... Time to order a new bit.

I figured that was the case after everyone asked why I ground the bit down.

Thanks for the help guys.

But if you must, you must.
