That's because most pipemakers would rather save time by picking up a hammer and whacking their kneecaps with it.

Very nicely done, Charl. I like this pipe a lot.

Going back and looking at it again, there is one thing that bothers me a bit with this one and that is the angle of the rim. With it slanted towards the bit it gives the illusion that the bowl tilts in that direction when it doesn't. I would do one of two things: 1) either make the rim flat or 2) put a slight bend in the stem.

It certainly isn't done often. At least to completion. Most attempts are abandoned or morph into "unpanels" along the way, I imagine.

Joe Nelson has made the bulldog version of this shape a couple times, and said never again after the last one.

PS -- I agree with wayne that a level rim (or even slightly back-tilted) rim would look better.
