Pipe-makers should probably do this, too. I traded some tobacco for a deeply pitted second I saw on facebook, and the maker said he'd send it immediately. Then on Friday. Then he actually sent it Saturday. He said he send me something to make up for it. He told me several times to watch my mailbox. Nothing showed up.

I have a couple, nothing life changing but they have stuck with me.

30 years ago My Boss told My co-worker He needed to work faster. My co-worker replied "this is a career, not a marathon". That one stuck with Me, Norm.

Anything worth doing is worth doing wrong. Sometimes you're gonna screw up, but not trying is not an option.

That has stuck with me... especially with raising kids.

Exceptions to this would be base jumping... anything involving heights, sharp blades, needles, or unfriendly critters (and maybe fire).

Base jumping is amazing. Anyone who wants to hear me tell a long story at a pipe show should ask me about it.

I saw a YouTube video of a base jumper... his arms came off... and his head... and his legs. Not necessarily in that order.

I'm assuming David's experience was more possitive... cause he's not dead.

Actually, he might be, and the bipedal entity we think of as D'Huber is really just an elaborate performance art piece. Not alive at all. An automaton project of some German guy (it could only be a German, right?) who wears only black, chain smokes cigarettes, never sleeps, and never smiles. A protracted performance that's constantly being filmed and will eventually become a movie. (Called I, David, no doubt.)

Unless such a project would merely represent craftsmanship, and wouldn't be considered art at all, of course...

Oh dear...

That's a fantastic question for discussion, isn't it?: When is something craft, and when is something art? :D

My grandfather has always given me nuggets of wisdom over the years. He ran a lawn care business for over 20 years on top of his Counselor position at my high school which he did for over 35 years. In high school I would give away my afternoons a few times a week to help them mow lawns in a subdivision he was contracted to mow. He would always tell me:

"Pay attention to the corners, the middle will take care of itself."

For many of you who mow your lawns, I'm sure you understand this. That, and the fact that mowing lawns gives you a lot of time to think. I've never been able to get that phrase out of my head and have applied it to a lot of what I do in life. Do the thing that matters, and do it well; the rest will see to itself.
