And another Dublin

Post by oklahoma red »

Dublins seem to be in Vogue these days. I've not posted anything in quite a while so I thought I'd show this one. Finished it up today.
Light blast, threaded-in Delrin tenon, red and black Cumberland stem.

What material is your shank extension made from?

I would have preferred thinner Ebonite wafers, or, at least, have them symmetrical.

Acrylic actually, not that it makes any difference. I made an error after the stack was glued up and had to shave off the end.

The saddle needs to be much closer to the shank face.

Due to the length of the extension, the saddle melds well.

Except for the overall concept, cut, finish, color, profile, stem shape, button, airway, slot, tobacco chamber, extension design, and stem material, I think it's a damn fine pipe.

nice finish on the stemwork! I think the saddle is too angular/gradual, but you will undoubtedly hear other opinions.

No can do G.I. This pipe really isn't very big. I'm as close as I dare to the threaded tenon. I put those suckers in so they won't come out. And tho I'm an old fart I'm not old school to the point of making an integral tenon. I've been in the plastics fabrication business for 40 years and I LOVE DELRIN!
But I appreciate your comment J. :D In retrospect I could have made my own Delrin tenon on my lathe with a tap and die and shortened up the thread a bit. This one happens to be a pre-fab from Tim West.

Thanks Bruce. I haven't heard the word meld since I used to play Canasta with me Aunt Marie a LONG time ago.

A bit "rubbery" for my taste and you have to add your own 'nilla.

Once I got the link open (apparently the Chinese government feels its necessary to censor that site) I got to have a look around at those blanks. It is really cool stuff and put what is probably a stupid idea into my head.

I have no idea if this would work, but I figured with your background in plastics I would ask. If someone were to make a simple cast, placed some small pieces of wood into it, and them melted some acrylic into it, would they have a similar material or a mutated globby piece of turd stick?

I'm not a plastics expert but I have done a fair bit of casting wood into polyester and urethane resins like you're referring to. It would work fine for shank/stem rings but you wouldn't want to have it exposed to the actual smoke. The heat and moisture would cause the wood to expand/contract differently than the plastics and wouldn't last. If you google "worthless wood" you'll find lots of examples of this developed for pen making and adapted to many other uses as well.
