I hope it's still the Monday after St. Patty's Day. I'm relying on that time!

It sounds to me like if you can have a pipe done by the deadline you can participate.

Hello everyone. Here's my attempt at a pipe for the PITH trade. This is my 5th pipe and is my first to share with the forum. I made a lot of mistakes on this one, and a lot of changes to try to correct them. :banghead: I cant decide if i should rusticate it or leave it alone. Its made of Pacific Madrone and has a Rhinoplastic stem. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Also, would you even classify this a a rhodesian?

I have a question for the group. I looked back at the beginning of this thread to double check that I'm still making a pipe in the right world... and I may have to start over.

At some point it was said(and I paraphrase) that "anything in the rhodesian/bulldog family" would fly. I started out with the intent to make a rhodesian, but that turned into an Eskimo, and now it's evolved into a freehand Eskimo... thing. Probably way out of bounds.

The question: will this still work? Kurt said "English classics," which this has clearly meandered from. Shall I post a photo of it as is to let folks make a judgement call? I think I could start over and still get something out in time.

I think I'm still in, but I'm having a heck of a time with some materials issues (or, more to the point - my lack of skill with said materials) and am very behind on some promised pipes... If it's okay, I'm a firm 'maybe' - hoping that I'll be done in time... if its not, and there needs to be a solid commitment, looks like I'm out on this one.

Cheers,

John

Well, here's my rhodesian. I'm fairly new at using a lathe and had some issues early on; this led to me trying some 'hand-facing' touch-ups which in turn led to the shank face getting slightly planed off at the edges. That's why it looks like there's a gap between the shank and stem, but it does fit flush over 98% or so of the face. I'm brand spanking new at stamping, which I botched, so whoever gets this also gets the pleasure of my last name and a half on the bottom of the shank. :D

Comrades!

"Rhodesian" is a political incorrect word. Rhodesia was a notoriously illegitimate state and doesn't exist anymore.
So I decided to make it right. Here comes my entry, the

Walle,

That pipe looks like an American Indian could have carved it out of Turquoise.

I love it!

Nice one, Walle!

That's just what I needed to see. If that's Walle's entry, I'll keep working on my weird hybrid eskimo thing. Thanks Walle! My fears are allayed. :)

Awesome work both of you! Nice grain and color on your rhodesian BeatusLiebowitz!!

Very different pipes but both beautiful! :D I would not mind owning either one of them, a shame I didn't enter the PITH:(

Hey guys!

So I'm gonna go ahead and say you shouldn't count on me for having a pipe to deliver by the due date. I'm going to push, but the pipe I intended for PITH has just gotten weird and it needs a rest before I tackle it again. I started another, but it detoured severely from a rhodesian to another freehand. Exerting my will over the block is much more difficult that I though. :banghead:

Walle, you never disappoint! That's quite a color.

Tim, that's a nice looking pipe!

Im hoping to finish up my entry this week.

This project should require all hand work and no lathe, to even out the playing field, hahaha.
Just kidding, the challange is good practice for those of us without a lathe.
I also needed to get into the shop (that time of year in VT where the living room walls are too familiar).

Well, between my military obligations and a baby due this weekend, it looks like I will not be able to complete my pipe on time. :( That being said, the progress I did make on the pipe was a great learning experience for a newb like me. I never would have even attempted a bulldog this soon on my own, so I believe that forcing myself out of my comfort zone on this project has been very beneficial, especially in respects to diamond shanks (2 ruined stems later). I think I will set this aside and come back to it after a bit more experience, in order to be able to do justice to the beautiful grain in this particular briar.

So, we'll have to see if two days is enough to make a pipe. Yeah... I started mine this morning.

Well, here's my entry.

5 1/2" long, just under 2" wide.

5/8" thick Mauve ebonite stem 2 5/16" long plus delrin tenon.

3/4" bowl hole, 1 1/8" deep.

I think it would look better with a saddle stem, but I'll let this pipe go as is. Lots of room to critique, I welcome any and all comments.
