Having just joined in on this forum, I am very late to the game here but would like to jump in if possible. I love a well made prince and want to take a stab at it.

Is it possible to enter the fray at this late stage?

Is the a virtual pipe carving competition with photos posted and critiques offered, based on photos of the pipe or are the pipes being sent to someone for judging?

Richard, we all post pictures and offer critiques and once the time has expired a random list is created and we all send another participant our pipe for more in depth critique and for them to enjoy. It's a critique based trade, of sorts. You'll give away a pipe, but you'll also get a free pipe with the focus on challenging ourselves to make better pipes. I think it should be fine for you to join, but I'll let Headmistress Scottie give the official word.

Thanks on that. I am in the midst of getting our boat ready for our upcoming charter season in Alaska. Our northbound departure is scheduled for May 3. Thus, I am not sure I will be able to get back into the shop with enough focus to make a prince of sufficient nobility for this august group. Perhaps its best if I do not commit to a project that I may not be able to fulfill. I think formally entering a pipe in this contest is iffy. If I get to a prince I will post it for critique in the gallery section, or should I do it here?

Here is a shot of our boat two days ago in the shipyard. Just phase one of an intensive maintenance schedule for the next two months. I do have plans to eventually retire from this work I have been doing for 18 years. Then I can get more serous about making pipes year round.

I will keep you on the list for now. It is ever evolving and won't be final until the deadline. If you get one made great. If not, there is always the next PITH.

You can't do any worse than Yeti...always saying he is going to make a pipe for the PITH and then backing out...bastard

What happens if you end up making a pipe that you would rather keep than trade?

Scotties what is the end date on this venture? Will there be a gallery compiled of 2014 pith? Is there a gallery compilation of the previous years?

The deadline is April 30th. This thread is the gallery so to speak. You have to cruise the entire thread to see all the pipes. Same thing with past PITHs.

Scotties thanks for the info. I hope to participate 2015. However really enjoying seeing all the variations on a classic shape. I'd really like to make one. Once I feel like I'm proficient with the billiard.

99.9% finished with the Desert Prince for the PITH trade. I'm debating with myself as to whether to leave the stem straight or bend it a tad. Opinions on that are certainly welcome (as are any other opinions).
Stummel is from a Vermont Freehand Algerian mini plateaux.
Shank extension is acrylic.
Stem is Nikko ebonite.
Weight: 32 grams
OAL: 6.75"
Bowl height: 1.25"
Chamber dia.: .750" (drilled with a J.Alan Design bit. GREAT cutter!)

Damn fine job Chas! That pipe is very sharp and classy. I think it represents the straight stem perfectly. It would not look right being bent, and I would say because it's army mount. If it were a seamless transition, then maybe a slight Bend would lend merit to the design. Man that's nice!

Thanks Nicholas. I guess we can call it a semi-army mount. There is a conventional 1/4" mortise and tenon joint recessed in the end of the extension rather than a taper joint. The tenon is Delrin and it is threaded into the end of the stem.
I put up some progress pics on Instagram and the consensus so far has been to leave it straight as you suggest.

Ha! I spoke to soon I guess. Now that I put up pics of the finished product on IG the pendulum has swung the other way. I think what I'll do is wait until the names are drawn and the person that winds up with it can make the choice.

I thought with your aerospace engineering background and love of fine tools, that precision, crispness, and symmetry would be present in your work. Instead, we get something that looks as if it was molded from silly putty, and finished with some sort of dull, flat-drying stuff. What are you doing with all those world-class lathes and aerospace quality jigs, anyway? Using them as conversation pieces?

Yep, I've chucked it all and gone "Grandma Moses". Bought 300 lbs of Silly-Putty and I let my dog do the finish work in her backyard turd farm. I like the "earthiness" of it.

I rarely actually laugh out loud when alone on a computer, but I just did. Good thing I wasn't drinking something or the screen would be a mess. Pokin' you Okies is a hazardous business, I see.
