It's not a bad thing to think about minutiae details, IMHO. The backside of the button on a pipe like this will be at a 90 degree angle with the stem but I've never found it to be obvious visually so I don't think it's an issue. Good question and one I'd not even considered.

I would countersink the mortise so it hides the divot if it bothers you. If you do make a shank cap, make sure you can ream the airway. A carbon coating develops in the airway, not just the chamber. I have a couple of pipes that I've needed to ream so far. And a few that cannot be reamed.

Yeah, I think I'll make the shank-cap or ring or whatever, but not in a way that it will cover the indentation, it would be a shame if it turns out to be a favourite smoker without any possibility to ream it!
