And related to the pipe you posted (and many others) I'm seriously considering making something with a "bridge" (I call it that way, I just mean a stripe of briar running around a hole) soon... Can't wait for the sanding!

While we're on the topic of Florov, did you guys see the estate Florov smokingpipes put up yesterday? I couldn't believe he was the maker!

What fascinates me, is that(in my opinion) Alex manages to breath a sense of timelessness into even his best "out there" pieces. Which is why I'm so impressed by him. Yes, time will tell if that's actually the case, I'm confident it is though.

This might make for an enlightening exercise.

Most PMF'ers have made a pipe similar to Alex's bulldog. Probably several. It's simple, plain, and classic, and there's little room for creativity with regard to shape.

What, then, EXACTLY is different about his that makes it better than yours? (provided you think that's the case)

And, if you can see those differences, what is it EXACTLY that keeps you from doing the same things/getting the same result? 'Cuz here ain't no magic. It's just tools, hands, eyeballs, and materials for both of you.

I would assume that the flattened top line of the stem was intentional and it is obviously done flawlessly (to my eye), The insert(s) is (are)well executed and I think a perfect color for an understated elegance, In fact all the colors selected work very well together. (I don’t know why you added the word tenon to that statement, would you please explain what you meant). The briar speaks for itself.

Yeah I honestly am not sure what was being hinted at. For an "English" bulldog the pipe is awful. For any other purpose, it's fucking spectacular as far as I can tell.

Agreed. Especially if your purpose is to burn tobacco in it.

I wondered what jj thought he might be seeing, too, so copied the pics and enlarged them to full screen size AND put on my bestest, most goodest glasses, and applied My Little Spy Eye to the problem.

What did I find? Nothin'. Nada. Zip. Zero. Nothing that could be classified as less than effectively perfect, in fact.
