One word of advice- don't do it. If nothing else, you could buy a shaped spade bit from pimo or Tim West- it'd work great, and it wouldn't kill you, which is a bonus.

Ahh you know that's good advice. The angle is too sharp for the bottom of the chamber, also, right?

I drove all over town today trying to find a good chamber bit.

I ended up using a regular spade bit, and then finished out the bottom of the chamber with a standard drill bit. That worked out alright.

Didn't do as well with the draft hole and mortise, not easy getting those straight, is it

I sure would like a lathe, and a drill press.

Images are fine in threads, fear not! Yeah, the angle is too sharp for one, also the chip clearance is... bad. It's meant to cut nice little chamfers, not deep holes. "Round drills for boring tobacco holes" 16.50+shipping will solve your problems. As will a drill press. Drilling by hand is... a pain to say the least. Try to get at least a drill press and a clamp. With those two things a lot becomes possible.

Someone on Craigslist is selling a 12 inch Craftsman lathe complete with spurs, drill chuck, chisels ... for $100, I'm so tempted.

For 100 dollars, do it.

Yeah I'd go for it, sure to be plenty of useful bits in there, even if you only scavenged it for parts or made a buffer.
