PITH 2015
Re: PITH 2015
OK, I got mine done.
In the spirit of the PITH I decided to challenge myself. For some strange reason I choose the hardest shape I could imagine to try to make into a sitter.
I don't normally name my pipes, but the geek in me requires that I christen this one "Unstable Equilibrium".
(No one ever said it had to be a stable sitter... )
Please feel free to critique.

Done.
It was interesting trying to design something that both sits and has a long straight shank. I tried to go for a rocking chair-like platform under the bowl and shank.

I'm going to have to bow out. Family stuff has completely eaten up my pipe-making time this summer. Maybe next year.

Looking at people posting fiished pipes makes me think I better pull my finger out!
Finally got a stummel roughed for this today though.
Third time lucky after one case of 'human error', and another where a tiny pit in the chamber turned out to be a huge flaw.

I should probably bow out. I recently moved and don't see myself getting around to this by the due date.

Re: PITH 2015
I've got mine drawn out and materials picked out, but I've been away from home quite a bit lately. I'll be working on mine next week.

Re: PITH 2015
Okay, just finished up. I'm pretty pleased with this one. I like the curves, and I think the sitter solution is unique. I do have a little stain on the bamboo that I tried to sand out, but was afraid I was getting to close to losing the skin.
BTW, I'm out of the country from the 24th until the 4th of August. I will have internet access, but once it's decided where to send this pipe, I'll be able to send it as soon as I return.
Thanks,
Jeremy.

Seamonster, nice looking pipe! Why the severe underbend?

Thanks Premal!
Do you think the stem needs more bend? I did several drawings with different bends, and this looked the best. It seems swan-like.

Re: PITH 2015
I am a believer of function slightly more important than form. With the way it is, clenching it will point right at the eyes.
Also, I think the form would be better with the 2nd half of the stem button side with more of a bend.

Re: PITH 2015
you're talking about a bend more like this? I agree with you, function over form. But as I was carrying this thing around during sanding, feeling for bumps, I thought for sure no one but SAS could clench this thing.... it's over 9 inches bowl-to-button, and just too damn heavy... in my hand it is more of a hold and sip sort of thing.... That was just how it felt in my hand, but maybe if I put a bend close to 90, it would hang low enough the weight would matter less. How much can you play around with bends? if I re-bent it, but decided I liked it better with less bend, would I be making a new stem, it could I straighten it without too many kinks?

Re: PITH 2015
This looks good, but maybe a little less bend at the end than the drawing. Yes, you can bend, re-bend a stem many times, but you can just over bend, and while it is cooling you can unbend to the desired bend. If it doesn't look right, then while it is still warm, re-heat a little and do it over.

Re: PITH 2015
Okay, I'll play around with the bend some.
Premal, I want to thank you, and Tyler, and a bunch of the other folks for all the help and support through this process. For me, the bamboo was quite a jump and challenge, and I feel like I was able to accomplish a whole lot, and make a couple of wicked pipes, due to your willingness to advise. So thank you.

Re: PITH 2015
Nice job seamonster! I'm spending the day today working on mine. Nothing like waiting to the last minute! How is everyone else doing? Does anyone foresee any issues with being done by the deadline? I should be done ahead of the deadline but I, for one, have no problem with extending it by another week if anyone needs the extra time. Questions? Comments? Concerns?
Re: PITH 2015
I just started on mine last night. Just worked on the bamboo. I don't see any issues getting done though.
