So, resently I have become more and more interested in using horn to make some kind of extension on a pipe because I think it's beautiful. However, my knowledge of the anatomy of the (cow)horn is very limited and I don't really know what part of the horn is used to make the extensions commonly seen on pipes.
So my question is simply what part is used? From what I've been able to find I have seen some things written about horn tips. Is this the only part that's solid or is the whole horn usable?
And also, I havn't been able to find any large solid pieces of horn. Does anyone have any suggestions on any suppliers? preferibly european.
Thanks,
Albert

Re: question about horn
Just the tip -- the last 2"-4" -- are solid and useable.
I have no idea where to get it in Europe.

Re: question about horn
Tip is usually the only solid part but anything large enough for your project is usable. Speak to your butcher first, always worth a try.
Re: question about horn
As mentioned.. From your local butcher is one major source.. Alternatively pet stores for dog toys when on sale... You can pick up buffalo horn tips for 5 to 8 euro and normally it can be used on 2 or 3 pipes
Also dictum.de, along with knife making supply stores

Thanks guys, I was pretty sure you only used the tips but wanted to be sure.
I checked out the dictum.de site and they seem to have alot of things so I'll definetly look closer on that website in the future! Thanks alot!
