Todd Johnson saved my life!
Todd Johnson saved my life!
Because of some advice Todd gave on this board, and my wife's insistance, I recently purchased a painter's "gas mask." Yesterday I was sanding a large-ish bent egg on my disc sander. With a not so great grip I (read stupidly) moved the stummel to the right side of my counter-clock-wise spinning sanding disc. Suddenly, the demon that haunts my workshop slapped the stummel out of my hand and the sanding disc launched it at my face. It clocked me square in my........................... new gas mask. It dinged the frickin' thing! I figure, based on the location of the ding, that it would have hit me square in the face. If it hand't knocked out a tooth, it would have certainly split my lip.
Thank you Todd Johnson... whoever you are!
This story, while sad, is completely true.

What a Nancy Boy. A real Artisan would have caught the stummel in their teeth.

Yeah, imagine – without the mask… What could have been the consequences? Ah, I read it somewhere else on the forum… No other way than to get back to coarse sanding – on your front teeth. Or maybe try a new rustication technique? Use the tooth for some never-seen-before stem inlay made of bone?
There's a saying here in Germany: Who is in trouble, doesn't have to wait for the mockery. Transscripted somewhat directly. Is there something similar in English?

There was a time when every pipe I made had some blood embedded in it somewhere :thumb:alexanderfrese wrote: Use the tooth for some never-seen-before stem inlay made of bone?

Real artisans have endured flying stummels knocking lit pipes out of their teeth. Some of us have even been treated to sucking on the ends of stems as the flying stummel (or chisel, as the case may be) cleanly detaches the bowl from the stem and embeds it in the wall behind us. 8OArtGuy wrote:What a Nancy Boy.
