chunky billiard?

Post by notow1 »

OK I broke the tenon and ended up with a gap at the shank/stem junction after repairs. My main goal was to make a chunky little billiard thus the lack of cheeks and the half saddle. I would appreciate opinions on whether this was a bad idea or a good idea executed poorly. What would You have done differently? I do appreciate all opinions and advice, thanks, Norm.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Not bad, to my eye. Yeah, it's a little chunky. You know that. Chunky isn't always bad, so long as the lines are crisp.

Stem/shank junction could be a little crisper. So could the top edge.

The half-saddle, on the other hand, looks too sharp. Saddles usually have a nice little radius to them.

To my eye, half-saddles should be oriented the other way, with the saddle on the bottom, but I think that's just my personal preference. I wonder what this pipe would have looked like had you reversed it. Oh, and I think the stem is over-bent by just a hair.

I do like the plateaux top, though.

What I would do differently is call this a dublin. :-) It's not really a billiard. Having said that, the shape is pretty nice in terms of proportions and such. Your lines look pretty good as does your bowl/shank junction. There is a slight rounding of the shank at the stem/shank transition. The half-saddle goes really close to the middle on yours. I think if the saddle weren't quite as deep, it would look a little more graceful. Also, the bend in the stem is fairly abrupt. Looking at the line that goes around the bowl to the button on the bottom, you can see how there is a separate S-curve on the stem. Try to make the entire line from top of the bowl to the button a single S-curve.

You can fix the gap by hand. Carefully correct it with a wide flat file, then sand on a flat surface like a piece of glass.

Thanks Premal, I actually did correct it with some 600 grit on a piece of glass. I find that sometimes it helps to walk away for a while but this kept bothering Me so I fixed it. Thanks for the advice, Norm.
