It appears you had the nozzle a bit too close. In order to get definition, without distorting the shape, hold the gun back a little farther. Once you get the topography of the grain, put the pressure back and then you can get close and personal with the briar.

Don't listen to this guy ^^^^... He never sandblasted a pipe in his life.
