First blast: pics added

Post by Joe Hinkle Pipes »

Requested views added to the top. Please forgive the fingerprints on the stem. Im off to job 2 in 10 mins.

I had planned on entering this pipe in the KC contest, but had some ID10T problems with the stamp company and won't have my stamp by the deadline. Nate gave me some direction and then let me loose on his blast cabinet. Let me know what you guys think I could improve on. There was a large pot on the back of the bowl and I kind of blew the line chasing it. Thanks for looking.

Joe, that's a pretty good looking pipe, but why is the bowl so small?

The chamber is 3/4". It's actually a huge pipe, about 6 1/2" long. I guess the answer to the question is that I only have a 3/4" or 1" chamber bit. I drilled a billiard very similar to this at 1" and the chamber is over the top stupid big.

Joe, Nice looking billiard.

On the next one, maybe little larger diameter on the shank, and a better flow to the fishtail. Also, from the picture, it looks like your tenon and wall are a little rough. I like how you did a softer blast to keep form of the shape.

I would comment more, but you do not have a good top and bottom view.

Premal, thanks for taking the time to reply. I know everyone here is very busy with multiple projects. I will try to add a few more pictures for the areas in question as soon as I get some time off from the day (and night) jobs.

I can see the top/bottom profile a little better now with the new pics. Although this style of tapering in a little, then fishtailing back out is common in classic shapes from factories, I find it displeasing to the eye on most occasions. Depending on the overall shape/length/shank/etc... there is a point in which the taper flows into the fishtail where it can look really good. Pre-1970's Dunhills are a good example of it done well on most occasions.

On this particular pipe I think just a very slight fishtailing would be more pleasing. It looks like the width of the button is just a little larger than the end of the shank.

Thanks for the input Premal. The more I dig into the billiard shape the more I appreciate all the intricacies involved in doing it right. The think I've made about 20 so far and still haven't nailed it down yet.
