Apologies, but it looks like you had an extra radius ring and just slapped it onto the pipe without giving thought to fit and symmetry. The stem is out of proportion at the mortise and, again, looks like something made for another pipe.
You shaped the briar well.

It looks like the airway and the mortise are co-axial, when it's one of those cases where they should have been drilled separately.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Josh the base of the stain was black, and then sanded offwith 400, then cordovan, sanded off with 600, then light tan buffed off, then shellac wiped off, and then buffed to finish

Hey Harry, I really like the bowl shape on this one. The parts that are off overall aren't that bad. It looks like you took too much off the top of the shank where it meets the bowl based on the angle of the stem and shank face. I agree with Bruce about the shank ring. It looks like it was salvaged from a different project. It's too wide for starters and then the recesses for the shank and the stem are cut too wide for the diameter of the shank and stem. The stem by itself looks good. This style of stem, however, looks better when the base is the same width as the end of the shank. Overall, not bad. With a few minor adjustments it would be a knockout.

Thanks Wayne! That's only the third shank ring I made so these tips will help on my next one!

Peanut Gallery Commentary : Visualise the ring at a 90-degree angle to the axis of the tenon & I think you'd like the result better.

Maybe it's my eyeballs but to me the ring looks to be perp to the tenon but it is at an angle on the end of the shank????

yea the shank ring is to big for this pipe but at the same time the only shank ring iv made looks like i tried to make it during a drunk seizure so take that with a grain of salt.

I think the comments about the ring and stem make a whole lot of sense. However, I too am still new to a lot of this, and until I read the more succinct/articulate comments from some of the other responses, I would not have been able to verbalize my thoughts.

Nice work shaping and finishing the stummel.

Keep making pipes.

It is perpendicular to the tenon/mortise. The top of the shank has too much briar removed and creates the illusion that the shank face tips backwards.

To be particular, you've described the issue, not an illusion. Whether you drill "off" or shape "off", the issue remains that the shank face tips back.

I only point this out because often times in pipe making people only look at issues from one perspective, so solutions are not obvious to them.

I'm not sure my point is clear, but I fear making it so would take 10,000 words. Never the less, this is a big enough point, IMO, to warrant throwing the thought out.

It depends on your frame of reference. It doesn't tip backwards in relation to the mortise but does tip backward in relation to the shank angle. If you drill first, you have to commit the shape of the shank to the angle of the mortise. If you shape first it's the other way around except that you have more wiggle room to fix things if your mortise is a little off. Is that what you're referring to? If not, you lost me.
