This should be fun

Post by LatakiaLover »

The friend of an older gentleman who is fighting a serious illness brought me a plaque-style board with three pipes on it that were "life memory" pieces. Three pipes that weren't fancy, but were each bought to commemorate a special event in the older gentleman's life, and so were cherished. They'd been mounted to the board for that reason, and the board placed in his office so he could look at them and remember those moments whenever he wanted.

Recently, the gentleman mentioned in passing how he now regretted having the pipes mounted because smoking them was impossible, and smoking them a few final times was what he wished he could do. His friend said he'd check around to see if that was possible.

The board and the story behind it found me a few days ago, and I said I'd do everything I could to return them to virtually-new condition. I was honored.

Here's the plaque:

And here's how they are attached. (Half-dollar-sized puddles of epoxy  )

The curve ball is that the middle one was dropped at some point, the shank exploded, and a makeshift repair of encasing epoxy was used to return it to service.

There are obviously a number of technical challenges to pulling this off, but the tough stuff is what makes repair work fun after a while. I'll post the result.

Wish me luck.

The picture of the middle pipe really doesn't do it justice. It is 9000 times worse in person.

Have fun!! :D

Thanks.

Sure. I've been in the mood for some tricky shit (a.k.a. stuff you Wannabe Texans can't handle  ) lately, so send away.

No. It would have mostly been a toy, and I decided I should spend more time doing real work.

I thought I'd finish up the thread with a pic of all three pipes, as well as show how the briar replacement/extension thingie was done. Doing those on finished pipes is tricky, and the sequence of operations is important for both alignment and gluing purposes (because of clamping difficulty).

PS -- No, the gold cap pipe is not briar. It's some super-hard white wood. Tulip, maybe.
