Wtf is wrong with me!?
Wtf is wrong with me!?
So this was my last pipe to finish for awhile, as my shop is disassembled (we moved) and we just had a baby (no time). This pipe was for a good customer and I was really looking forward to completing this one. I'm very upset with myself. As you can see, I just sanded right into the airway like a battlefield surgeon cutting off a leg!
Im sure some of you have been there. I guess I'll call him tomorrow and ask if he can wait for another one to be made. At least I have the stem started and rough shaped. I'll have to outsource the drilling of a blank somehow though because my lathe and press are in pieces. Who should I contact for a drilled cavalier blank?

Sorry to see this and not meaning to be a dick (like that ever stopped me) but I don't understand your drilling there and how you managed to sand through the airway, a cavalier is one of the safest shapes in this regard?

Been there also.
Re: Wtf is wrong with me!?
I've got one or two in the burn pile that look like that.

There are two holes if you look in the mortise; one further towards the front and one further towards the back. I must have subconsciously disregarded the airway to the chamber.

Chris is right. Since this is a cavalier, there's a much easier way to drill it and it will save you pain in the future when making this type of pipe.phmann wrote:There are two holes if you look in the mortise; one further towards the front and one further towards the back. I'm about to embark on making a cavalier and thought that, if possible, would be best to drill in the normal manner so that a pipe cleaner could pass. Right? Wrong? Indifferent?phmann wrote:Thank you very much!d.huber wrote:Chris is right. Chris is right. This would be wrong. Although...wmolaw wrote:I'm about to embark on making a cavalier and thought that, if possible, would be best to drill in the normal manner so that a pipe cleaner could pass. Right? Wrong? Indifferent?
I've only made one cavalier and I drilled it so that it could pass a pipe cleaner. I'm not sure it was a good idea though.
