Stummel and shank union
I am a beginning pipe maker, making an effort to study the shape of pipes and replicate that in my work. The one thing that catches my eye is the junction of the shank to the stummel. On a straight billiard or apple, I see a clean corner going around the end of the shank as it meets the stummel; what is the best method of achieving that? Perhaps meticulous sanding at those corners? On a bent pipe, the effort of achieving a nice round curve on the top of the shank as it joins with the stummel. With that, I use a round Nickleson chainsaw file, but it seems that a narrower file would be better. I have made one billiard, I am currently working on another.

File work is essential. You can cut pretty close to final dimension with the cutting edge on a flat bastard file, then finish it out with a smaller chainsaw file- Nicholson makes a small one. After that it's just careful sanding and finishing- no real magic too it.
